Project Description

Highland Mall, the first indoor shopping mall in Austin, opened in 1971 and thrived for decades before its decline along with the surrounding neighborhood. Recognizing the potential embedded in the underused property, Austin Community College District (ACC) acquired the site and launched a visionary, multi-phased public-private partnership to reimagine the former mall into a vibrant academic district. While ACC transformed the former mall into its flagship campus, RedLeaf Properties developed the former surrounding surface parking lots into a mixed-use district. As the first phase, the conversion of the former JCPenney store established the foundation for the mall’s comprehensive redevelopment.
