Designed by Listening: Touring the Campus that Shaped Our Firm

Texas School for the Deaf (TSD)

In 1988, our young firm took on what would become one of the most defining projects in BGK’s history: transforming the historic Texas School for the Deaf campus in Austin.

Over more than two decades, BGK led five phases of work, designing 22 new buildings and renovating more than 250,000 sf — helping breathe new life into a deeply cultural and historic place for the deaf community. At the time, there were no established standards for designing for the deaf, so we partnered directly with students, educators, and stakeholders to create custom solutions: wider walkways, clear visual sight lines for communication, and pioneering classroom environments.

This work became a blueprint for our collaborative, inclusive design process—and a powerful reminder of what architecture can achieve when all voices are heard. What was once at risk of demolition is now a thriving, beloved campus.

As part of our 40th anniversary celebration and ongoing education series, BGK recently returned to the Texas School for the Deaf. Walking the halls again and seeing how the campus has grown was humbling, inspiring and provided our leaders the opportunity to share their knowledge and passion. A heartfelt thank you to TSD for the warm welcome and wonderful tour.
