BGK's Alison Binford and Central Health’s Stephanie McDonald recently presented "Is Adaptive Reuse Right for Your Project?" at the COAA Texas Chapter Spring Symposium, sharing lessons learned from the transformation of the former Sears building into Central Health's new community-focused care center. The session explored how adaptive reuse projects can unlock new opportunities within existing structures while addressing complex challenges related to building systems, sustainability, cost, functionality, and long-term community impact.
As communities seek innovative and responsible ways to meet evolving needs, adaptive reuse continues to emerge as a powerful project delivery strategy. The discussion reinforced that successful adaptive reuse requires a collaborative approach—one that balances creativity, technical expertise, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement. While every project is unique, the most impactful solutions often come from reimagining what already exists and creating new value from familiar places.
